INTERESTING BARK AND BERRIES
As autumn leaves fade, the intricate patterns and textures of tree bark are revealed. From the smooth, silvery gleam of birch bark to the deeply furrowed character of oak, our gardens showcase a captivating array of bark. These remarkable structures are not only eye-catching but also essential for a tree’s survival and provide habits for countless creatures.
Our berry bushes and trees are bursting with colour in autumn, attracting birds, insects, and small mammals. Keep an eye out for fiery clusters of Rowan, Hawthorn, and Guelder-rose berries, especially around our lakes. And don’t miss the unusual, lychee-like fruits of our Kousa dogwood trees.
TOP GARDEN & DEER PARK
The Top Garden and adjoining Deer Park offer a tranquil escape as the seasons change. Once a vibrant Pinetum, the Top Garden now features a collection of evergreen conifers that stand out against the autumnal palette.
Just south of Leonardslee House, the sprawling 70-acre Deer Park, home to over 100 Sika and Fallow deer. As the days grow shorter, the park takes on a mystical charm, with deer gracefully moving through the mist-shrouded trees. AUTUMN WILDLIFE
RUTTING SEASON
Autumn brings an exciting spectacle to Leonardslee as deer enter their rutting season. As young stags compete for dominance, their impressive displays of strength and agility can be observed from a safe distance. Please keep dogs on short leads at all times to ensure safety of both animals and visitors.
BIRD LIFE
While we bid farewell to some migratory birds heading south, we warmly welcome birds from the far north. Look out for flocks or colourful finches, such as Siskins and Lesser Redpolls, as they feed on seeds among the treetops. While Fieldfares and Redwings find refuge in the valley.
WALLABIES
Our colony of winter-hardy Bennett’s Wallabies, descendants of the original herd brought here by Sir Edmund Loder in 1889, thrive in our gardens.
With their thick, warm coats, they bask in the winter sun and forage among the plants. As the undergrowth dies down, our wild wallabies are easier to spot in the deer park.
