Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens’ Community Volunteer Initiative

Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens near Horsham, the Grade I Listed woodland gardens in West Sussex, has a range of volunteer opportunities. Just a decade ago, the future looked bleak for Leonardslee, once described as ‘the finest woodland gardens in England’, renowned for its rhododendrons and spring displays, and home to one of the best and most intact Pulhamite rock gardens.  

But in recent years it had declined. Developed and tended by generations of the Loder family, the estate had gradually been sold off and eventually the gardens, too, had to go. And, when the new owner was refused planning permission to develop the site, he just shut the gate and left. The gardens seemed doomed.  

“At that point, Leonardslee was considered a famous but lost garden; spoken of sadly and in hushed tones,” says Head Gardener Jamie Harris. It lay abandoned for nearly 10 years, but in 2017, 

The Streeter family bought and rescued the gardens, and after a major investment programme over nearly two years, the estate opened once again to the public. 

Community Volunteering

Volunteers dedicated to animal care can assist with the wallaby and chicken enclosures, playing a crucial role in the well-being of these creatures.

Volunteers in The Clocktower Café and the retail section provide a warm welcome to all, ensuring every visitor feels at home. Additionally, the newly introduced Leonardslee Gardens Art Gallery and Sculpture Park offer art enthusiasts a chance to contribute to an exciting project, enriching both the gardens and the local community.
